Photovoltaics is the name of a method of converting solar energy into direct current electricity. In other words, thanks to this technology it is possible to produce electricity from solar radiation free of any emissions.It is one of the technologies described as a renewable energy source.

Converting the sun’s radiation directly into electricity is done by solar cells. These cells are made of semiconducting materials similar to those used in computer chips. When sunlight is absorbed by these materials, the solar energy knocks electrons loose from their atoms, allowing the electrons to flow through the material to produce electricity. This process of converting light (photons) to electricity (voltage) is called the photovoltaic effect.

Currently PV achieves wide market uptake. The reason for that are the following: far greater awareness of environmental issues (no carbon gas emissions), widespread availability of solar radiation as well as economy due to falling cost of technology and increased effectivity of the modules.

It is estimated, that solar 174 petawatts (PW) of energy that comes in form of solar radiation (or insolation) hits our atmosphere. Almost one third of this is reflected back into space. The rest, 3 850 000 exajoules (EJ) every year, is absorbed by the atmosphere, clouds, oceans and land – one hour of insolation is the equivalent to more than the world’s energy consumption for an entire year.Solar energy is by far the largest energy resource on the Earth There is no doubt that dynamic growth of this technology may revolutionise our perception of energy production.

This process seems to be underway following the huge boom on the solar market worldwide that could be observed in the last decade. At the end of 2006 the total global capacity of solar installations was around 6,9 W whereas at the end of last year it reached the level of 190 GW with the growing tendency It means that cureently PV satisfies around 1% of global demand for electricity.

Germany is the global leader in the solar market with the Total capacity of 32 GW. For comparison, Polish conventional sources have power potential of 38GW with solar capacity at the level of around 25 MW.

To sum up, one needs to stress that solar energy’s potential is basically unlimited and therefore it makes it the be most interesting and prospective renewable energy technology.
